In my last leadership blog I talked about the power of vulnerability in life and in business. But how do you show your vulnerability as a leader, on a daily basis?
I'm working with a very senior executive at the moment, and he reveals a little vulnerability every time we meet, with fantastic results.
Does he cry in every meeting, bare his soul or lament every shortcoming? No. His approach is much more subtle.
This executive shows his vulnerability by casually revealing his limitations (or what he wants me to believe are his limitations) and gaps in his knowledge or experience.
With phrases like, "You know, I have no idea where to start with this: What do you think?" and "Gosh, I made a real mess of that! Let's try it again!" he tells me that it's ok to be human and imperfect. It creates an atmosphere of openness, trust and engagement.
And when he says, "I'm not so good at that stuff, but then, that's what I've got you for!" it makes me feel as though I'm valued and have something important to add. It boosts my confidence and as a result, bright ideas and positive energy flow through our discussions.
It is so simple and elegant, this show of vulnerability. But its effect is profound. I step up my game every time, even though I know exactly what he's playing at.
Now that's leadership!
